Episode #10: The Democratic Party and Corporate Power with Rep. Chris Deluzio
We went to Capitol Hill to talk with the congressman from Pennsylvania's 17th district about why he outran Kamala Harris in a swing seat.
Welcome to the podcast Organized Money. You can listen to today’s episode with Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-PA) on Apple, on Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
We had an election this month, and Democrats are currently engaged in their favorite post-election sport: yelling at each other about who was responsible for the loss. We decided to be slightly more productive, and talk to a Democratic candidate who won on the theme of supporting working people and attacking monopolies.
In a district that includes working-class areas outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Rep. Chris Deluzio (D) defied Pennsylvania's red wave, outperforming Kamala Harris to secure a second term. Two of his colleagues lost their re-election races in Pennsylvania, and one challenger in the state failed to unseat an incumbent Republican in a targeted seat. So what did Deluzio do differently?
We went to Deluzio’s Capitol Hill office to talk about what the Democratic Party can learn from his victory. Deluzio says Democratic candidates in tough races won by focusing on pocketbook issues and standing up to powerful forces harming their constituents. Deluzio says you need a clear vision and bold messaging, and you must be willing to name enemies: “Not every issue has a win-win solution. Sometimes there’s a bad guy, and you’ve got to be willing to fight them.”
